ISTQB – FAQs

I became certified tester by ISTQB  clearing ISTQB Foundation Level Certification. Many of my friends/colleagues are querying me about ISTQB; how to appear for the exam, exam fees, study material etc., to get certified. This FAQ type article will resolve your many questions. Please comment your questions in comments section.

What is ISTQB?

  • ISTQB® (International Software Testing Qualifications Board) was founded in November 2002.
  • It is a legally registered non-for-profit association in Belgium

What is ISTQB Certified Tester program?

At present there are two levels. First level is Foundation Level which has one module. Second level is Advance Level which has three modules.

Expert Level is being developed by ISTQB body.

What is ITB?

Indian Testing Board is the Indian National Testing Board approved by ISTQB. It is responsible for conducting ISTQB exams in India.

What is the eligibility to appear for ISTQB certification Foundation Level?

There is no eligibility criterion. Anybody can attend. But there are criteria for Advance Level,

For Bachelor’s Degree (or higher) Holders in Computer Science or related fields

  • Foundation Level Clearance
  • 24 Months of Testing Experience in IT, Testing, Development, QA, Engineering or related fields (For any 2 sub-levels)
  • Min. 36 Months of experience mandatory for Adv. Complete Certification(For all 3 sub-levels)

For Non Bachelor’s Degree (or higher) Holders in Computer Science or related fields

  • Foundation Level Clearance
  • 60 Months of Testing Experience in IT, Testing, Development, QA, Engineering or related fields

Why certification? Is it worth?

It is a debatable topic. There are skilled and experienced testers without having being certified.

Certifications will definitely help you if you are looking for a job / job change in the industry.

What is the difference between ISTQB and ISEB?

  • Both in ISTQB and ISEB (International Systems Education Board) Syllabus for Foundation Level only is same.
  • Both the certifications are web based
  • ISEB belongs to UK where ISTQB is International. There is no discrimination in Certification for Foundation Level only.
